New Year, New Skin: Dermatology Resolutions That Actually Work

New Year’s resolutions focused on skin health are among the most achievable and measurable goals you can set — because skin improvements are visible. Unlike vague wellness intentions, a commitment to daily sunscreen or a first professional skin exam has a defined action and a verifiable outcome. At Elect Dermatology in New Braunfels, Dr. Hockley and Dr. Stahr help patients set realistic skin goals at the start of each year and build the habits that make them stick. These are the ten resolutions with the most evidence behind them.

Resolution 1: Commit to Daily Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

Daily SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most impactful skin habits you can build — and it’s the one most patients neglect. A landmark prospective study by Hughes et al. (Ann Intern Med, 2013) found that daily sunscreen use significantly reduced actinic damage and photoaging compared to discretionary use. UV exposure drives collagen breakdown, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer risk. In Central Texas, meaningful UV exposure occurs year-round — not just in summer. Apply every morning, reapply when sweating or swimming. This one habit prevents the aging and damage that is most difficult to reverse.

Resolution 2: Schedule Your Annual Skin Cancer Screening

A full-body skin exam with dermoscopy is a high-value preventive health appointment — particularly for anyone with fair skin, significant cumulative sun exposure, a personal or family history of skin cancer, or numerous moles. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends regular professional skin exams as a cornerstone of skin cancer prevention. Book your appointment early in the year and put it on your calendar annually. Early detection of melanoma at Stage I carries a 5-year survival rate exceeding 98%.

Resolution 3: Start a Retinoid

If you aren’t already using a retinoid, this year is the right time to start. Retinoids — including prescription tretinoin and OTC retinol — have the strongest clinical evidence of any topical ingredient for photoaging reversal, acne treatment, and hyperpigmentation improvement. They work by accelerating cell turnover and directly stimulating collagen synthesis. Start low (0.025% tretinoin or 0.5% retinol), apply 2–3 nights per week initially, and expect 8–12 weeks for meaningful results. A review by Mukherjee et al. (Clin Interv Aging, 2006) summarizes the extensive evidence base for retinoids across all major aging concerns.

Resolution 4: Establish a Consistent Routine

Product-hopping is one of the most common skincare mistakes. Cycling through new products every few weeks prevents any single product from working long enough to be evaluated. Commit to a consistent, evidence-based routine for at least 8–12 weeks before judging results. A foundational routine — gentle cleanser, targeted active (retinoid or vitamin C), moisturizer, and SPF — is all most people need to start. Consistency matters more than complexity.

Resolution 5: Address a Chronic Skin Condition

If you’ve been managing acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea with OTC products without meaningful improvement, this is the year to seek professional care. Prescription options — topical immunomodulators, retinoids, antibiotics, biologic agents — provide a level of efficacy that OTC products cannot replicate for moderate-to-severe conditions. Most patients who come to Elect Dermatology for conditions they’ve been self-treating for years are significantly better within months.

Resolution 6: Stop Picking and Touching Your Face

Face touching and picking introduce bacteria, spread inflammation, deepen comedones, and create post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that can take months to fade. This habit is one of the most underrated contributors to persistent acne and skin texture problems. Set a specific, trackable goal: no picking for 30 days. Most patients notice measurable improvement in both clarity and texture within that window.

Resolution 7: Prioritize Sleep and Stress Management

Chronic sleep deprivation elevates cortisol, impairs barrier function, and reduces skin’s capacity for repair — all of which worsen every skin condition. Stress drives sebum overproduction, inflammation, and immune dysregulation in skin. Committing to 7–9 hours of sleep and a consistent stress-management practice (exercise, mindfulness, whatever works for you) produces measurable skin improvements — not as a supplement to skincare, but as a foundation of it.

Resolution 8: Upgrade One Part of Your Routine

Rather than overhauling your entire routine, commit to improving one element this year. Switch from a drugstore SPF to a stable, well-formulated mineral SPF you’ll actually use daily. Add a vitamin C serum to your morning routine for antioxidant protection and brightening. Replace a generic moisturizer with a ceramide-rich barrier repair formula. Small, targeted upgrades compound over a year into meaningful improvement.

Resolution 9: Schedule a Professional Treatment

If you’ve been curious about a chemical peel, radiofrequency microneedling, Botox, or dermal fillers — book the consultation soon. Most cosmetic treatments deliver results that home products cannot replicate, and starting a treatment series early allows full results to develop. The best time to take action on a skin concern is now, not after it has progressed further.

Resolution 10: Protect Your Skin From More Than Just UV

In addition to daily sunscreen, commit to broader sun-protective behaviors: UV-protective clothing during prolonged outdoor exposure, wide-brim hats, sunglasses, shade during peak UV hours (10 AM–4 PM), and complete avoidance of tanning beds. Each layer of protection reduces your cumulative UV burden — which in Central Texas is substantial even in winter.

Making Your Resolutions Stick

The best skin resolutions are specific, scheduled, and attached to existing habits. “Apply sunscreen every morning after brushing teeth” is more durable than “use sunscreen more.” Put your annual skin exam on your calendar today. The best time to invest in your skin is when you’re motivated — not after problems develop.
