Do Cysts/Boils Need To Be Removed?
Rest assured that the majority of cysts are benign or noncancerous. However, there are certain circumstances where a cyst will need to be removed. The majority of cysts will not disappear without treatment.
Cysts/boils may need to be removed depending on the following:
- The type of cyst
- The location of the cyst
- If the cyst is causing pain or discomfort
- Whether the cyst is inflamed or infected
- Grows rapidly
- It bothers you for cosmetic reasons
During the removal of the cyst, our Dermatologist will carefully drain it by cutting a small incision into its outer membrane. The cyst will then expel its inner contents, flattening the surrounding tissues. Depending on the cyst’s size and location, a small suture may be needed to close the incision.
In addition to medical dermatology, an inflamed cyst can be treated with an injection that will cause it to shrink.
Depending on your type of cyst, our Dermatologist will provide you with a unique care plan that will address your concerns and help alleviate your cyst/boil.
Do I Have A Cyst?
Cysts are usually small, round lumps under the skin that can appear anywhere on the body. When pressed, they feel firm and smooth and can generally be moved under the skin.
A cyst can present in response to an injury or infection. Many times, however, a cyst can occur for no known reason.
The Most Common Type of Cysts are:
- Dermatofibromas
- Epidermoid (or Sebaceous Cysts)
What is a Boil?
Like a cyst, a boil is a fluid-filled pocket under the skin. However, a boil is filled with pus. Boils can be painful and usually result from bacteria infecting a hair follicle.
Carbuncles are clusters of boils that form a connected area of infection under the skin.
Boils Commonly occur in the following areas of the body:
- Face
- Neck
- Armpit
- Buttock
- Thighs
Boils are treated in the same manner as a cyst by draining the infected site. However, depending on the severity, antibiotics may be prescribed to heal severe or recurrent infections.
