Causes of Blackheads and Whiteheads
The infamous characteristic of blackheads and whiteheads is caused when the pores in your skin become blocked. The skin is filled with tiny holes that individual hairs grow out of. Sebaceous glands are attached to these hair follicles and produce oily sebum that keeps the hair from drying.
A clog can form if these sebaceous glands become overactive and create too much sebum. Harmless bacteria inhabiting the skin can contaminate and infect the follicle, causing papules, nodules, or cysts.
In addition to whiteheads, the following types of acne can occur:
- Blackheads
- Papules
- Cysts
- Nodules
- Pustules
Acne is largely a hormonal condition driven by androgen hormones. These hormones typically become active in the teenage years.
Certain situations and conditions can make it worse, including:
- Fluctuation hormone levels around the time of a woman’s menstrual cycle
- Picking at sores
- Clothing, headgear, and dirty phones
- Lotions, pomades, and/ or waxes
- Stress
- Medication
- Genetics
Regardless of the cause of the acne you are experiencing, our skin specialist can help to resolve your breakouts so you can live confidently with clear skin.
